What Does a Chiropractor Actually Do During Pregnancy?

If you’ve ever Googled “chiropractor during pregnancy” and then immediately gone down a rabbit hole of conflicting opinions, first of all, welcome, you’re in good company. Second of all, let’s clear some things up.

Prenatal chiropractic care is one of those things that sounds a little intimidating on the surface (cracks! your spine! while you’re pregnant!) but is actually one of the gentler, more supportive things you can do for your body during one of its biggest seasons of change. Here’s what it actually looks like, and why so many of our patients wish they’d started sooner.

Your Body Is Doing a Lot Right Now

Pregnancy isn’t just a belly getting bigger. It’s your entire skeletal and muscular structure shifting to accommodate a growing human being. Your center of gravity moves forward. Your ligaments loosen (thanks, relaxin). Your pelvis widens. Your lower back curves more than it used to. And all of this happens gradually, over months, while you’re also expected to, you know, live your life.

The result? A lot of people end up dealing with low back pain, hip pain, sciatica, round ligament discomfort, rib tightness, and a general sense that their body is running the show without consulting them first. Chiropractic care can help your body adapt to all of that change in a way that’s more comfortable, and keeps things as functional as possible along the way.

So What Actually Happens at an Appointment?

First thing: prenatal chiropractic looks different from regular chiropractic, and we’ve got the setup to match. That includes specialized positioning and cushioning that lets you lie comfortably in positions your regular bed stopped offering months ago, including face down, which for a lot of pregnant people is a moment of genuine joy. We work with your body however it needs to be positioned throughout the visit, and comfort is always part of the plan.

For new patients, we always start with a thorough examination before anything else. That means a full health history, a structural and functional assessment, and a real conversation about what’s going on in your body and what you’re hoping to get out of care. From there, we put together a treatment plan that’s specific to you, not a generic prenatal protocol, but something built around your pregnancy, your history, and your goals.

Before any treatment begins, we walk you through exactly what we’re planning to do and why. We explain the purpose of each technique, what it might feel like, and what we’re hoping it will accomplish. You’ll have plenty of space to ask questions (we actually love the questions), and nothing happens until you’re fully on board. Informed consent isn’t a form you sign and forget; it’s an ongoing part of how we work together. If something doesn’t feel right or you change your mind mid-visit, you say the word and we adapt. Always.

Treatment Comes in Many Forms

A course of care might include:

Gentle adjustments. The techniques we use during pregnancy are specifically chosen to be safe and comfortable. Around the belly, everything is slow and deliberate. Your comfort and safety guide every decision we make.

Soft tissue work. Muscles and fascia matter just as much as joints. We often incorporate massage and soft tissue techniques alongside adjustments to help everything settle and release together.

The Webster Technique. This is the one worth knowing by name. Webster is a specific chiropractic approach designed to assess and address imbalances in the pelvis, sacrum, and surrounding soft tissues. The goal is to create the most balanced, spacious environment possible for your baby, which can also support optimal fetal positioning as your due date approaches. It’s gentle, it’s evidence-informed, and it’s woven into Dr. Hill’s approach with every prenatal patient.

Webster gets searched a lot, especially when a baby is malpositioned, and it’s a good reason to come in. But it’s one piece of a bigger picture. The work Dr. Hill does to support pelvic balance, soft tissue function, and overall mechanics during pregnancy goes well beyond any single named technique, and often that fuller picture is where the real difference gets made.

A lot of what we’re doing in prenatal care is preparation, alongside the ongoing work of keeping you comfortable and functional throughout the pregnancy itself. During labor, the pelvis moves through an enormous range of positions as the laboring person rocks, shifts, walks, and tries every configuration their instincts and care team suggest, all in search of the orientation that opens the birth canal and helps the baby move through it. That’s hard work under pressure. What we’re doing in the weeks and months before is trying to get as much of that work done in advance as possible, freeing up range of motion, releasing tension in the surrounding soft tissues, and giving the pelvis the best chance of moving freely when it really counts. We can’t write the story of your labor, but we can try to give your body more options when it’s time.

Is It Safe?

Yes, when performed by a provider trained in prenatal care. This is important. Prenatal chiropractic is its own specialty, and not every chiropractor has the training or the equipment to do it well. At Pinetree, it’s a core part of what we do, not an afterthought.

There are very few contraindications to chiropractic care during pregnancy, and most of them are related to high-risk pregnancy complications that your OB or midwife would already be monitoring. If you’re unsure whether it’s right for your situation, we’re always happy to talk it through, and we work closely with other local providers to make sure your care is coordinated, not siloed.

When Should You Start?

Honestly? Whenever you want. Some people come in during the first trimester because they’re already feeling the early shifts. Some come in during the second trimester when things really start to feel different. And some come in the third trimester because their back has finally had enough and their midwife told them to call us.

All of the above are fine. But here’s our honest opinion: the earlier you start, the more time your body has to stay ahead of the changes rather than playing catch-up. Regular care throughout pregnancy tends to mean a more comfortable pregnancy overall, and sometimes a smoother birth experience too.

You Don’t Have to Be in Pain to Come In

This might be the thing we say most often. Chiropractic care during pregnancy isn’t just for when something is wrong. It’s a way to support your body through a genuinely demanding physical experience. Think of it less like a repair visit and more like maintenance. Your body is working incredibly hard right now. It deserves a little backup.
